Network also announces performances by Beyonce, Jay-Z, Lady GaGa and Taylor Swift

In news that surprised no one, MTV announced today that “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner will appear on the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.  Additionally, the trio will introduce a new, extended trailer for the second installment of the blockbuster franchise.  This break comes after it was revealed MTV.com will debut the first single off the ‘New Moon’ soundtrack, Death Cab for Cutie’s “Meet Me on the Equinox,” the day of show.

Pattinson, Stewart and Lautner previously appeared on the MTV Movie Awards in May where they debuted the first trailer for “New Moon” and helped the show achieve record ratings.  The cast also appeared on the 2009 Teen Choice Awards last month although they didn’t appear to provide a significant ratings bump to that FOX institution. In particular, Pattinson is becoming such an awards show regular you have to wonder if he can withstand the urge to appear on the upcoming Emmys and American Music Awards.

For music fans, MTV also announced an impressive lineup of performers at this year’s VMA’s including Beyonce, her husband Jay-Z (although it’s assumed they are performing separately), Taylor Swift and Lady GaGa.  Rumors continue to swirl that Madonna will make yet another appearance on the MTV institution, but no word from the network on that one.

Previously announced performers include Green Day, Pink and Muse. Among the evening’s presenters are Katy Perry, Nelly Furtado, Leighton Meester, Chace Crawford, Ne-Yo and Miranda Cosgrove.
